Evaluation Task 4 - How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Script:

Dasha

During our pre-production stage, we used a wide variety of media technologies to research into the different themes and similar artists which helped us develop our star image for the artist. We used Youtube to research into similar media texts that gave us ideas of what we could add to our artist or to our music video. Youtube also helped us develop the artists image because we were able to explore different elements of detail that were needed in our particular genre. Most of this contributed to the beauty shots which were close ups of the artist, as well as ideas of how to shoot the dance to make it look connected to the artists performance. We also made an animatic storyboard which we shot on the Blackmagic and then transported it into Adobe Premiere in order to cut it up and post it on YouTube. By having an animatic storyboard, it helped us realize that our cuts weren’t fast enough and that during our shoot day that we will need to make sure that we get enough material for short cuts.

During both shoot days, there were several examples of using new media technologies to help create our music video. We shot the music video on a Blackmagic Ursa Mini using a range of Zeiss lenses. We used a range of lights from PixelLine to atomic 3000 canon to help fulfil the club-like atmosphere of our concept. We then used a light board to organise the movement of the lights with the beat of the music. This meant that later, in post, our cutting was made easier and more slick; thus again making a more professional product. As well as this, we used the newest iPad to have a clapper board on our production day. This was furthered through the use of an aux cable to play the music aloud on the speakers in the studio so that our artist could sing along to the lyrics and feel excited and motivated, creating a better performance. Lastly, we used an LG flat screen TV which we attached to the camera, so that when shooting we could see the product on a larger screen to enable us to spot out any mistakes that we may have not noticed on the camera’s screen. This was important as it helped us to direct our artist and critique our work as we went along.

We edited in an entire Mac based suite. We put our rushes into a rush bin, Syncing all our footage with playback to the timecode on the editing software timeline. This was done by using the IPad in the beginning of each shot which shows a rendered video with the timecode of the project. This had the exact time to our song therefore pointing the camera at the IPad means you can then marry the timecode on the IPad and timecode on the timeline.
When finishing the project and we had done a performance rough cut and had moved onto the final edit it was the about colouring and grading.
When colouring the product on the software lumetri, our main focus was Brightness and contrast, increase contrast to brighten the black and whites. This was something we took into consideration in pre-production and production because we used beauty lighting which made it easier to sharpen our artist to give her a more polished look. We also focused on the Saturation to bring out the colours in the piece and it highlighted colours we had not already seen such as greens and purples which added another layer of texture to the product.

When exhibiting our product, we used multiple technologies such as YouTube, Hurtwood Livestream, Facebook and Instagram. As our target audience is between 16-25, we knew that social media would be the most obvious way to reach our target audience and build up hype. YouTube is also a great way for our artist to be discovered and we believed that this level of exposure would generate a lot of interest with the youth community and those that enjoy clubbing and house music.

Target Audience

Lova's target audience would fall under the category of being 16-25 year old females and males, this is because her music opens up and can relate to some problems that people could have that age and it lets them get away. Most of this generation would like her music due to the fact that it has a club like aspect to it and allows people to immerse themselves in that type of atmosphere. My group and I have discussed and feel that the video focuses on the aspect of the male gaze because she is being sexualized in the video as well as has a beautifying look that appeals for female audiences. This could be used for both genders as females might want to aspire to look like her.

Promoting our artist

To help promote Løva's 'Star image' and raise awareness of her, I made social media accounts to show what she had been doing that day and to make her simultaneously present and absent, linking to Richard Dyer's theory. I also made a Yahoo account to give fans a way to contact her. She most likely wouldn't have the time to reply or even read any of them but a reply every now and then would make her fans feel connected to her.

To start, I made an instagram account where Løva can give details about her debut album and accompany this information with images taken on set, making her audience feel closer to her as they are aware of where she is and what she is doing.

I then made a twitter account for Løva so that she can tell her audience how she is feeling or what is happening in her life, again making it seem to the audience that they know her really well.

On the right you can see that I made an Instagram account for our production company 'Beezy' as we can make links between the collaboration with Løva.

Over the course of the project, I regularly posted tweets for Løva to show that she is active and to keep her audience engaged.

To help increase the believability of her accounts, I followed well established artists or artists similar to Løva to make it seem as if she knows them or has worked with them before.

Despite not being able to get Løva's accounts 'official', she did gain some followers from the general public in a matter of days which proves that audiences are constantly looking for new interesting artists so that they can claim to be their 'number 1 fan' and can feel as if they have a more personal connection to the artist than anyone else.

Who we could sign our artist to

Below are the Companies who produce our music as a Label. We feel that our artist could drift into two different genres being Pop with artists such as Coldplay, One Direction, Adele, Pixie Lott and Hailiee Steinfield.

It could also fit in with the dance genre because the DJ assembles with artists such as Calvin Harris and Sigma. My first choice because i feel our artist appeals to largely mainstream 16-30 year old audiences would be SYCO Music - A subsidiary company of Sony Music. Owned by Music connoisseur Simon Cowell

With Artist such as One Direction, Ella Henderson and Fifth Harmony I feel our music fits right in with there's and we are able to create a star image similar to these other artists because of the marketability of a young new female artist.

Although it may be seen as a more predictable approach my second choice would be Atlantic Records because they have proven track record of really helping to promote young artists. Ed Sheeran being a good example however a better example being Jasmine Thompson who studied in London and was discovered by Atlantic of Youtube a similar route in which we feel our artist would take making Atlantic a great choice for a label

However these extremely successful labels may not be possible so it may be more suitable to go for a label such as Domino Records because they are independent and will really nurture and help to grow the artist in the right environment and this could provide a perfect stepping stone for moving on to one of the two labels that I mentioned earlier. they also fit more into our other side of the genre going down the dance route which could provide a healthy alternative as some artists are singed to more than one label in order to help distribute their music in different areas. Such as Disclosure who have the original track.
